Poem intro text: [it was only a tiny dagger so small really / a kiss in comparison to the hundreds which had cut him and which he had mocked] Romans 12:14,17 [originally written 7.21.2017]

Hemopheliac

it was only
a tiny dagger
so small
really

a kiss
in comparison
to the hundreds
which had cut him
and which
he had mocked

and
he had lent it to her
not because he loved her
which he did

but
he couldn't hide anything
from her grasp
her teeth
on every toy

yet beneath his scars
he bled
and had been bleeding
and continued bleeding
and would still yet
continue bleeding

and when she cut him
yet again

she could not see
that now

he allowed himself
to feel

Hide and Seek

she hid her soft summer colors from him --- because she could never see his

Not You

today I am focusing
on the scent of fresh broccoli
as the knife slices through
the tender heart of the stems

and not
the words you spoke
which severed my heart
from yours

the grey and sand of backsplash tile
the bright voice of water
as it soothes the florets
with a lullaby

and not you
not you at all

the clean and white of paper towel
tearing from the roll
crumpling in my hands

and not the promise of your heart
torn from my soul

the lukewarm of linoleum
against my cheek

and

hot tears

not you

The Crystal Sea

The boat lists in the crystal sea, tipping lower into the clear water. Sand on the seafloor shimmers as sunlight kisses it with ripples. A gossamer vine waves in an underwater breeze as a hand streams through the water — gentle, pale, smooth.

Laughter like wind chimes.

She is finally at rest. Finally she breathes freely and deeply.

Finally, she laughs with joy at the beauty of sky and cloud and sand and sea.

She is freed from her chains, and her arms are free from the marks, the indentations of the iron bands which once held her prisoner.

Words in the Dark

because all around me
i feel the dark
i feel it clinging
curling
around my bonelike arms

but i whisper
here against my pillow
whisper clenched-fist words
rescue
rescue
rescue
breathing bruises
from a small and purple heart

i breathe
words as thin and false
as cotton candy
trust
trust
trust

make them real to me

you will rescue me
illuminate the night
turn the bands of darkness
into bracelets
glittering on my arms

and as i sleep

i breathe your name
